High differential pressure across your filter?

A high or rapidly rising differential pressure costs energy, reduces flow and shortens filter life. We trace it back to its cause and engineer the right filter element.

Differential pressure is the most important indicator of a filter’s condition. A high initial value points to a design problem — too little filter area or a medium that is too dense. A value that rises too quickly points to a loading problem. Both have different causes and different solutions.

Typical signs

The differential pressure is already high with a new filter element.

The differential pressure rises much faster than planned.

The pump has to work harder to achieve the same flow.

Filters are replaced on pressure alarm long before the planned interval.

From problem to product

We do not start with the product; we start with the cause.

1Problem

Differential pressure too high

High pressure loss across the filter, reduced flow, higher pump energy.

2Cause

Too little area or too dense a medium

Undersized filter area, filtration grade finer than required, or rapid loading by particles.

3Solution

More effective area, matched medium

Increase effective filter area, match filtration grade to the real requirement, protect with prefiltration.

4Technology

Element design

Pleated designs offer more area in the same space; staged filtration spreads the load.

5Material

Permeable media

Media with high permeability at the required separation efficiency.

6Product

Filter cartridges & elements

Filter cartridges and elements designed for low pressure loss in your installation space.

How we approach it

Initial vs. rising pressure

We first distinguish a design problem from a loading problem — they need different solutions.

More area, same space

Element geometry and construction can increase effective filter area without more installation space.

Grade matched to the task

A filtration grade that is finer than needed raises pressure loss without benefit.

Two kinds of high differential pressure

If the differential pressure is already high with a clean element, the filter is undersized or the medium is too dense for the flow rate. The solution is more effective filter area — for example through a pleated construction or additional elements — or a medium with higher permeability at the required separation efficiency.

If the pressure starts low but rises too quickly, the filter is loaded faster than its capacity allows. Here the levers are the filtration grade, the filtration principle and a prefilter that takes the coarse load. This is closely related to filter clogging.

In both cases, the permissible maximum differential pressure of the element and the pressure budget of the system have to be considered together. We design the filter element so that it fits both.

Frequently asked questions

What causes a high initial differential pressure?

Usually too little filter area for the flow rate or a medium that is denser than necessary.

Why does the differential pressure rise so quickly?

The filter is loaded faster than its capacity allows — often due to a high solids load, a too-fine filtration grade or missing prefiltration.

Can the pressure loss be reduced without more installation space?

Often, yes — for example with a pleated element design that offers more filter area in the same space.
