How to integrate filtration into a machine
What machine builders should clarify early so that the filtration fits the installation space, the pressure budget and the service concept.

Filtration is often treated as a purchased part that is added at the end of a machine design. In practice, the filtration affects installation space, pumps, pressure budget, maintenance access and operating costs. This guide summarises the points we clarify with machine builders when filtration is integrated into a new machine.
Integration in six steps
Separation task
Define what has to be separated from what — and what filtrate or clean-gas quality is required.
Operating window
Flow rate, pressure, temperature and chemical environment, including start-up and cleaning phases.
Filtration principle
Surface or depth filtration; cleanable or replaceable elements; continuous or batch operation.
Installation space & arrangement
Element geometry, number of elements, flow direction and access for replacement.
Pressure budget
Clean and maximum permissible differential pressure, and how it is monitored.
Service concept
Replacement intervals, cleaning procedure and spare-part supply over the machine lifecycle.
Typical mistakes in machine integration
- The filtration is defined after the installation space is fixed — leaving too little filter area.
- The pressure budget does not include the differential pressure of a loaded filter, only that of a clean one.
- Access for element replacement is not planned, increasing service time.
- A standard element is used although process conditions require a different medium.
- Spare-part supply of the filter element over the machine lifecycle is not secured.
Information that makes integration easier
A short description of the machine, the separation task and the main operating parameters is enough to start. Useful additions are a sketch or CAD envelope of the available installation space and the expected annual quantity of filter elements for series production.
Housing or element only?
Many machine builders integrate the filter element directly into their own construction. Matching filter housings are available on request.
Frequently asked questions
When should filtration be considered in a machine design?
At concept stage — when installation space, flow paths and pressure budget can still be adapted.
What differential pressure should be planned for?
Plan for the maximum permissible differential pressure of a loaded element, not just the clean value. The specific value depends on element and process.
Can you design the filter element around our installation space?
Yes. Element geometry and arrangement are designed to fit the available space in your machine.
